I love seeing work (reputable work, of course) shot in my own back yard. It's so reassuring that even for an outsider it's possible to shoot work that is neither hackneyed nor dull. When the work transcends the strict geography and culture of the place and deconstructs it well enough for it to be of entertainment to those whose eyes are sullied by the immutable regularity of the subject matter.

I say this because I have a constant fear of shooting other people's back yards (something I do almost exclusively) and thinking it's good work when a local might look at it and yawn, deeply, and move on. Not that anyone has ever said to me 'hey, I really like the shots you did in my city, they were so fresh and interesting', so I have to continue with the fear. But at least I am conscious of the predicament and can take measures to avoid it.

This is something that only comes from the tedium of the new. For being presented regularly with exotica, the exotica itself becomes quotidian. And only at that point can I work!
