Another Man's Arc

Sad news this morning. Milton Rogovin is dead at the age of 101, just a few days before his latest show of portraits was to open in Chicago. I wrote about his rephotographic portraits a few years ago. There is a very good interview with him here, and his photos can be found all over the web and in various books. He was one of the great portraitists of our time, and until his death probably the oldest working photographer.

Milton Rogovin, 1909-2011

  1. From the interview on AmericanSuburb X it appears he only really took up photography seriously at 47. (And poetry at 90)

    Inspiring.

  2. I went to the new Burchfield Penny Gallery building in Buffalo a few years ago to see (what else?) a Charles Burchfield show. It was great of course, but a completely unexpected bonus was a Rogovin exhibit of his Southwest side pix mostly of Native Americans. Fantastic. Rogovin was a talent and a mensch. (Buffalo is a great city too. Nobody would believe that.)

  3. He waited until 47 to begin but he still got over 50 years of photography in.
